We already knew that Leica was quite discreet on the digital photography market, but according to Amateur Photographer, the photographers of the prestigieuse Magnum photo agency will soon be recruited to test some of the upcoming photo cameras from Leica. However, it is not clear yet whether this will cover the Digital SLR cameras (like the S series) or some compact cameras (like the M9).

Here is a Leica M6 indecently stripped. The reality that they are usually content to imagine as naked here is shown in pictures of the compact rangefinder without any clothes, or more precisely without some of the external decorative parts.

Is the Sony NEX-5 as good as a Leica M9?

This is the interesting question asked by Steve Huff on his blog. As a matter of fact, he took a Leica Noctilux ASPH f/0.95 lens on both the Leica M9, and the Sony NEX-5 (with an adapter).

Surprisingly for some, the Sony small inexpensive NEX-5 is giving pretty much the same results in quality even if the lens adapter is slightly reducing the field of view.

Thanks to Steve for an interesting comparison idea. It is showing that digital quality is improving in a way which is reducing the picture differences between cameras while leaving a lot to compare the other features of the cameras.

You take a Leica M9, you bring it to an international designer and you look at the result.

This is more or less what Leica did by asking to Walter de’Silva, the head of the Volkswagen style/design team. He had already drawn many industrial objects like Audi, Seat, Alfa Romeo (Did you notice the common link between these?) but here he tries his hand on a photo camera.

Autoblog has pictures not only of the Leica M9 Titanium photo camera, but of the designer himself in his studio.

What do they want? How do they think about it? Painting colours onto our photo cameras… Worse, painting them without looking at the result…

Discontinued cameras at Leica and Nikon

Surprisingly, the PMA fair has been the opportunity to announce not only new products, but also the death of some others. The most prominent ones:

Leica announces the end of its R-Series manual focus SLR cameras. Probably to be replaced by something else at the same level.
Nikon has now discontinued the Nikon D40, after a very long and successful life. No replacement announced yet.
