Such a beast of lens is not for everybody, but you can’t beat reading real-world testing.

I hesitated quite some time and, while I was waiting for its arrival, I admit I was somewhat frigthened that buying it may have been the biggest mistake of my photographer’s career. I am no longer frightened and I offer to share why using it was so positive.

Out of its price, it appears frighteningly heavy. I would not say this is a light lens (3.8kg, no less!) but it is astonishingly well balanced; Most probably because it has a large optical group in the back, near the camera body. I was coming from my habits with a Minolta 400mm f/4.5 (of -only- 1.8kg) which I learned to handle without a pod (to track fliying birds). With the help of the image stabilization (active in the viewfinder), I could shoot vultures and storks filling the frame at 400mm and smaller, faster birds (European rollers) in a wider frame. Just remember that you need some space around or the head of your neighbours will not appreciate your ample moves. And those who met me face-to-face understand that I am not really an athlete!

The zooming ring falls right in your hand and is ideally fluid with a nice run (not too short, not too long for my taste: A big 90° angle to go from 200mm to 400mm). The advantage of the integrated multiplier is resolutely recognizable. I thought that it could be a pleasant addition with a limited use. This is much more than that: The combination of the focal range and the multiplier teaches you to easily move from one range to the other. I quickly built a reflex of re-centering the focal range when reaching 400mm (one push of a finger on the multiplier lever and a small ring turn and I’m back at 400mm but in the middle of the available 280-560mm range; and back).

The materials used to build it are pleasant and re-assuring to handle (the sun visor is quite rigid even if clearly plastic-made). The case which -at launch time- have temporarily appeared as maybe a separate option was included. If it protects the lens well, removing it from the shipment would have reduced the price by nearly 600€ (at this level of price, every little thing could help) and moving this jewel around in so recognizable a Canon case would call for robbery. Who would be ready to put this case on the conveyor belt of an airport check-in counter? Seriously!

Speaking of image quality,I should let more competent people count lines, measure fringes, peep pixels and describe the technologies deployed by Canon. I can only say that all you se in the viewfinder looks great (f/4) but I would tell a little tale that I can share with you. Back from Kenya with plenty of photos (my finger is a bit heavy and the 70D continuous shooting is quite fast, even when I shoot completely immobile subjects). While reviewing the images, I tried to compare AF results of a leopard lying on the ground by merely zomming as much as possible on the eye of the animal and by checking the precision of the vein lines and iris colors.

Of course, this cannot stop you having fun shooting pictures (the leopard below really winked at me (you can see it by moving your mouse over the image – if you click, you will see his nice eye).

All in all, no regret. The Canon 200-400mm f/4 ext 1.4 is a sumptuous piece of optical photographic glass.

We are not alone. Plenty of people on the web have the same objective and they brought us exactly that: A wealth of comparisons, parallel tests and face-to-face reviews for the newest contenders for the title of “Most attractive enthusiast-targeting photo camera with a Full Frame sensor”.

• Low Light Comparison of the Canon 5D Mark II, 5D Mark III, and Nikon D800 from Joe Marine (via PetaPixel): It’s an impressive show of the Canon video performance (even calling the old 5D MkII in)
• DxOLabs does a number of reviews and comparisons aiming at the sensor quality (D800 & 5D MkIII): does not leave any doubt about the photo ability of the Nikon sensor (or should I say Sony sensor?).



• Nikon D800 vs. D3s and D7000 comparison by Cary Jordan: is obviously impressed by the D800 performance (as an excellent FX camera and as a very good DX/APS-C camera, too.)
• Canon EOS 5D Mk III Vs Nikon D800 at PhotoAnswers: is rather balanced but shows very nice D800 pictures.

It’s clear that the most recent launches by Canon and Nikon are fighting more or less each other on a market of experts and pros. So, in the recent days, I collected a number of comparisons between the Nikon D800 and the Canon EOS 5D MkIII to help you check this out by yourself:

Now, I would like to underline the quality of a full series of posts, published by Patrick Moll on Alpha Numérique, and dedicated to comparing as precisely as possible the various offers now on the market to develop and improve as much as possible the pictures that -sometimes- we must shoot using very high levels of ISO sensitivity (with the troubling levels of digital noise that come with big ISO levels).

Even if you are not reading French, I highly recommend checking these (most of the posts are made of image comparisons using the yellow buttons to select the software program results you want to see). Even if you are equipped with Pentax, Canon or Nikon gear, the lessons you will draw from this are applicable on all the photo camera brands, concerning strengths and weaknesses of each of these software tools.

To understand the review process and the methodology, I would recommend the reading of (here, all in French):

With the tests, body by body, you will immediately recognize the excellent results of Lightroom 3/Camera Raw 6 (these two Adobe software programs share a single common RAW file management core). Just behind, comes DxO Optics Pro 6 which is a bit more violent (or more accentuation prone) and the (not famous enough) Bibble Pro 5.

From this point, you will always be able to get the best from the photos you were forced into shooting in poor lighting conditions which required big ISO figures.

It is often a little difficult to compare two cameras feature by feature. I’ve come to a web site which does that (and only that), but does it nicely: SnapSort.com.

I found a very good and very detailed field test of the Canon EOS 7D.

Since it is not often that you will find such an in-depth analysis by a pro-photographer (Nature Photographer Ole Jørgen Liodden from Norway) ready to disclose so much information, I wanted to share it with you.

Note: After switching from Canon to Nikon, Ole had some hesitations about keeping all the information of this field test available on his wbe site, but this is solved now and we can expect that to stay for a long time, for all Canon lovers to find.

But, even if you are ready to switch from your current brand of photo camera, which one should you choose? There are a few comparisons that are starting to pop around the Internet and I want to list them to you:

• The Mansurovs: in Nikon D3s vs Canon EOS-1D Mark IV highlights the 9 key differences between them and says “this camera [the Canon EOS-1D Mark IV] beats the Nikon D3s in almost every feature category.”
• PhotographyReview.com says “the choice comes down to image quality vs. speed.”
• Digital Rev says “Canon EOS-1D Mark IV vs Nikon D3S – Rivalling in Speed and Sensitivity” but they simply compare feature lists and draw no conclusion.

So, which one is yours now?

Obviously, this is a pro-level mechanical design. You immediately notice the weight of this zoom lens (at no less than 1.9 lbs (860g), this is not a cheap plastic lens). Some photographers may even find it too heavy for ease, but if you tend to use your wide-angle zoom on a tripod, you won’t notice it and it will bring some additional stability to the SLR Alpha-series camera body.

The bulk of the objective is in relation, but it offers several noticeable advantages:

1. The lens length does not change when you zoom
2. The front lens does not rotate when zooming or focusing (since you need very fine polarizers on such a wide-angle, it’s better that way)
3. the focus and zoom rings are wide, well located and easy to reach
4. The AF-lock button on the side is well located
5. The depth-of-field window is large and quite readable

Now, if you start playing with the lens, as I did on a Sony Alpha 700, the operation is very smooth. Obviously, the presence of the SSM motor is helping a lot and AF operation is nearly totally silent, while very fast.

Now, I could not yet evaluate the image quality (the lens is announced as having a high IQ), and I will provide some more info when I will be able to play with it (probably during my trip to Nepal next week).

All in all, you will find several hundred SLR camera tests, feature lists, prices and the special offers from our preferred partners.

It is often difficult to group lens reviews in order to compare/evaluate a little more than their mere physical characteristics (focal length, aperture/diaphragm, or even number of individual lenses). But how would you evaluate/review optical quality? When I see the really impressive differences between two lenses, I would be prepared to judge from their price, but a cheap wide-angle lens is not always worse than a slightly more expensive one (well… if the price difference is really large, it’s not only an accident and quality explains a lot).

So, where should we go?

I collected the addresses of some web sites appearing quite able to provide this kind of quality reviews/comparisons/evaluations/tests (I try to be systematic, with your help, while telling what I believe are the strengths or the weaknesses of each one).

From here, I invite you to an orgy of lens reviews, lens tests, lens comparisons, lens evaluations. And remember to shoot some photos, too. It’s not only the lens which does the photo. Some are shot by telephones, if the photographer is an artist.
