A Time-Lapse Lunar Eclipse
Credit & Copyright: Forrest J. Egan (Digital Astro)

Explanation: During a lunar eclipse, our Moon appeared to disappear.

As the Earth moved between the Moon and the Sun, the Earth’s shadow fell on the moon, making it quite dark.

In the above picture the Earth’s rotation, multiple exposures, and digital enhancements are used to create a time-lapse effect that dramatizes how the Moon looked as it faded out and re-appeared during the three hour lunar eclipse.

As the Earth’s shadow engulfed the Moon, the lunar images became less and less bright, practically disappearing during totality.

At this time, the Moon, which normally shines by reflecting direct sunlight, shone only by sunlight refracted through the Earth’s atmosphere.

A few recommendations for time-lapse videos:

Use high-definition: Your photo camera can do it, the video will be great in HD.

Include some attractive central subject: Don’t just shoot clouds and skys.

Make sure that there is a lot of activity: It would make no sense to speed up a boring single move from right to left (or similar).

Innovate: Let’s be original, a rotting piece of food has been shot hundreds of times.

After you’ve shot a few hundreds or a few thousand images (you’d better have a big memory card, right?), you should make the video. Here is a list of software programs that you could use:

GBTimeLapse is able to control Canon cameras, and assemble pictures ($79, or trial version)

QuickTime Pro ($29.99). Just start with menu command:
File>Open Image Sequence…

Instructions for using MPlayer can be found at the end of the “How to Create Time-Lapse Movies with a Digital Photo Camera” article.

Free MPlayer (available for Linux and Windows) will do it all with a couple of command line instructions (see the box at the right).

Flix ($10.00 for new users)

Older versions of Jasc Paint Shop Pro used to include a program called Animation Shop (unfortunately, Corel removed it from recent versions).

For the Mac (I did not try it), the most famous solution seems to be iStopMotion (from $49).

Time-lapse movies are actually photos taken at a relatively slow pace (for example, one photo per minute or one photo per second) and assembled into one long sequence displayed as a video movie. What is slow will appear fast.

Interestingly, it can be done by nearly anybody with:

A good camera

A tripod

Some patience or a timer

Remember that you can easily do it with your own camera (not even an SLR camera), that you should use the following settings to have the best possible result:

Manual focus

Manual exposure (set diaphragm aperture and shutter speed)

Fixed white-balance

One example from PlayingWithTime is shown here:

QuickTime™ 5 is required to view this movie. Click here to download the plug-in.

So, you too can have fun and show us your work.
