J’ai longtemps hésité et, pendant que j’attendais son arrivée, je me suis un peu demandé si je n’avais pas fait une erreur gigantesque. Je n’ai plus de doutes et voyons pourquoi il pourrait vous convaincre et comment son usage m’a retiré mes inquiétudes.

Hors son prix, l’objet est effrayant par son poids annoncé. Je ne dirais pas qu’il est léger (3.8kg mazette !) mais il est étonnamment bien équilibré ; sans doute parce qu’il a un bloc optique important du côté de la monture. Je partais de mes habitudes avec un Minolta 400mm f/4.5 de 1.8kg que j’avais appris à manier à main levée pour suivre des oiseaux en vol. Avec l’aide de la stabilisation d’image dans le viseur, je me suis pris à shooter des vautours ou des cigognes plein cadre à 400mm ou des oiseaux plus petits, plus rapides (des rolliers) en cadrage plus large. Attention, il faut de la place ou le choc sur le crâne d’un voisin sera peu apprécié mais je m’en suis bien tiré. Et ceux qui me connaissent personnellement savent que je ne suit pas exactement un athlète !

La bague de zooming tombe très bien sous la main et idéalement fluide avec une bonne course (ni trop longue, ni trop courte à mon goût : un gros quart de tour pour aller de 200 à 400). L’avantage d’un multiplicateur intégré est absolument frappant à l’usage. Je pensais que cela serait un ajout plaisant mais pas forcément pratique. Il n’en est rien : la combinaison de plage de focales et du multiplicateur fait que l’on passe facilement d’un mode à l’autre. J’ai rapidement pris le réflexe de me recaler au centre de la plage quand j’arrivais à 400mm (un coup de doigt sur le multiplicateur et un petit mouvement de bague et me revoilà à 400mm mais au milieu de la variation de focale entre 280mm et 560mm ; et inversement).

Les matériaux utilisés sont très agréables et rassurants (le pare-soleil est clairement tout en plastique mais reste parfaitement rigide). La valise qui -au lancement- avait semblé devoir être un équipement séparé fait bien partie de la livraison. Si elle protège très bien l’objectif, ne pas l’inclure aurait réduit le prix de près de 600€ (à ce niveau il n’y a pas de petites économies) et puis trimbaler ce gros bijou dans Canon case aussi reconnaissable revient à réclamer le vol à l’arraché (balèze le voleur mais quand même). Quel pro ira mettre cette valise sur le tapis des bagages enregistrés en soute ? Sérieusement !

Du côté de la qualité d’image, je laisserai plus compétent que moi compter les lignes, gratter les pixels et décrire les technologies employées. Je dirai seulement que l’œil sur le viseur, tout est plaisant mais surtout je voudrais relater l’expérience anecdotique que je viens de faire. Je reviens du Kenya avec bien trop de photos (j’ai le doigt lourd c’est vrai et je rafale facilement même sur un sujet presqu’immobile. Je me suis surpris à comparer la finesse du point sur des images de léopard couché zoomant à fond sur l’œil de l’animal et en contrôlant la précision des veines et des colorations de l’iris.

Évidemment, cela n’empêche pas de faire des photos et de se faire plaisir (le léopard ci-contre m’a vraiment fait un clin d’œil que vous pourrez observer en passant la souris sur l’image – en cliquant vous pourrez voir son bel œil).

Au bout du compte, aucun regret. Le Canon 200-400mm f/4 ext 1.4 est vraiment un monument d’optique photographique.

Si Canon Imaging continue à croître grâce à un Yen vivement déprécié (c’est le résultat de la politique économique de Mr. Abe), le nombre total d’appareils livrés descend (-21% comparé à 2013). Et les appareils compacts se retrouvent au sous-sol (-28%). Interchangeable Lens Digital Cameras reste une catégorie assez floue (avec les reflex et d’autres), mais leurs résultats sont encore relativement bons avec une baisse de (seulement) 7% en quantités.

A partir de là, personne ne sera surpris que Canon reconsidère l’importance relative de rester dans le marché d’entrée de gamme où la concurrence vient d’appareils photo très bon marché étudiés et fabriqués en Chine et de smartphones aussi chers que bien des appareils photo dédiés (mais toujours présents dans nos poches). Aucune information officielle n’a été diffusée bien sûr, mais le bruit court que la décision a peut-être déjà été prise de quitter totalement le marché des compacts d’entrée de gamme pour se concentrer sur des produits plus riches (ou plus chers).

Ce que j’en pense ? Ça serait complètement logique et cohérent avec la stratégie marketing actuelle des grandes marques (à commencer par Canon, Nikon et Sony) qui s’efforcent de monter leurs produits en performance (un reflex plus gros, plus cher, plus pro ; parfois en allant en direction de la mode rétro comme le Nikon Df ; des capteurs Full Frame sur tous les appareils photos, y compris les plus compacts). Une possibilité reste néanmoins que Canon sous-traite ses produits difficiles que sont les appareils d’entrée de gamme à un partenaire chinois qui se contenterait de coller le logo Canon sur la face avant (pour rester à peu près présents sur ce marché).

On a déjà tout dit à sno sujet (vous trouverez ci-dessous une liste d’articles à propos de son lancement), sauf le prix : Pas moins de 11769 dollars US ! Même un poil plus fort que ce qui était attendu de la rumeur.

Les premiers exemplaires seront normalement disponibles à la fin du mois de mai, même si les sources chez Canon confirment que les quantités initiales resteront assez limitées au début.

A propos, la valise de transport est en option au prix de 649 dollars US… Il n’y a pas de petites économies.

Depuis, les rumeurs se sont étendues. L’objectif a été vu à plusieurs reprises entre les mains de divers photographes (en particulier, lors de certains événements sportifs). Mais il semble bien que l’été dernier Canon a mis en évidence un problème qui a retardé le lancement. Impossible de savoir quoi, mais le fait est que cet objectif est bien réél et qu’il n’est toujours pas disponible.

Malgré son prix (prévu au delà de 11000 dollars, soit beaucoup plus de 10000 euros), il intéresse beaucoup de monde parce qu’il rassemble quelques qualités rares dans le monde des gros zooms :

1. Un zoom 200-400mm qui ouvre à f/4, soit un diaphragme grand ouvert sans atteindre les poids et les coûts ridicules d’un f/2.8.
2. Cette combinaison se rencontre déjà depuis plusieurs années chez Nikon dont le AF-S NIKKOR 200-400mm f/4G ED VR en est à sa deuxième génération (principalement pour une révision de la stabilisation optique).
3. Sa grande ouverture autorise à employer un multiplicateur de focale ; mais ce genre d’outil est souvent difficile à manier. Le nouveau Canon intégère le multiplicateur 1.4x dans un mécanisme interne qui se présente comme une sorte de bulbe latéral. Le multiplicateur est ainsi disponible simplement en le basculant du bout du doigt dans l’axe optique. Ya pas plus simple !

Ce dernier point est une innovation qui a étonné et qui semble avoir un bel avenir si Canon sait gérer la mécanique associée (mais c’est vraiment dans leurs cordes).

Selon Canon Rumors (qui s’est déjà distingué par plus d’une rumueur infondée au sujet de cette optique comme à propos d’autres produits Canon), l’annonce va intervenir dans quelques jours (le 15 mai ?) pour une disponiblité à la rentrée 2013. Rien n’est certain, mais si vous voulez vous rendre compte plus directement, il y a un photogrpahe australien, Joshua Holko, qui a été autorisé à publier un test de quelques minutes en vidéo.

• Construction protégée contre la poussière et les éclaboussures,
• Qualité optique « proche de celle des objectifs à focale fixe »,
• Bouton de limitation de course (pour un AF plus rapide).

Sigma a aussi révélé qu’ils vuelent faire de ce zoom le premier d’une longue (et nouvelle) série d’optiques destinées aux photographes sportifs (comprendre : une collection d’optiques à longue focale, peut-être avec un prix relativement abordable… pour des super-téléobjectifs).

Alors, il ne nous reste plus qu’à patienter afin de voir si ces caractéristiques apparemment alléchantes viennent bien avec une excellente qualité optique comme le promet Sigma pour ce nouveau 120-300mm f/2.8 DG OS HSM.

Nous ne sommes pas seuls à rêver ainsi. Il y a de nombreux internautes dans la même situation et c’est exactement ce qu’ils nous offrent sur divers sites web : une volée de comparaisons, de tests en parallèle et de face-à-face sans pitié pour ces nouveaux adversaires dans la course au titre de « reflex le plus attirant pour les photographes experts en quête d’un capteur Full Frame ».

• DxOLabs fait de nombreuses revues techniques et permet la comparison en vue de déterminer la qualité du capteur photo (D800 & 5D MkIII) : ne laisse aucun doute sur les possibiltiés photo du capteur de Nikon (ou de Sony).



• Nikon D800 vs. D3s and D7000 comparison par Cary Jordan : est assez évidemment appréciateur de la performance du D800 (aussi bien comme un excellent reflex FX que comme un très bon appareil DX/APS-C).
• Canon EOS 5D Mk III Vs Nikon D800 de PhotoAnswers : montre une comparaison qui ne s’engage guère, mais présente de bien belles images du D800.

However, based on the results of extensive testing this change in exposure value will not noticeably affect the captured image.

Néanmoins, après des tests extensifs, il résulte que ce changement dans l'exposition n'affecte pas l'exposition de manière notable.

C’est exact : l’écart semble être d’un tiers de diaphragme. L’écart est faible. Mais les utilisateurs d’un appareil pour experts ou pros semblent peut-être plus difficiles à convaincre que le grand public.

Nous verrons ce qu’il en sortira. Peut-être pas un vrai scandale (Canon propose quand-même de vérifier votre appareil en service après-vente), mais quelques commentaires acerbes et une légère irritation…

Mais il y a maintenant un nouveau rebondissement puisque Canon a annoncé suspendre la livraisons des appareils jusqu’à plus ample informé. Il semble maintenant clair que Canon n’a pas l’intention d’organiser un rappel de parc (pour le moment), mais il semble aussi plutôt clair que le problème n’est pas du genre à disparaître avec une simple mise à jour de firmware.

Pour le moment, il reste important de rappeler que le problème ne se présente que lorsque l’on fait des photos à très haute sensibilité (avec peu de lumière) mais quand une source de lumière relativement intense éclaire le dessus du boitier. La situation n’est pas forcément très courante. Donc, il reste assez normal que Canon prenne un peu de temps pour une analyse complète.

Il ets clair que les récentes annonces de Canon et Nikon s’affrontent plus ou moins directement sur le terrain de la conquête (ou re-conquête) des experts et des pros. C’est pourquoi, j’ai pris quelques jours à récupérer un certain nombre de comparaisons entre le Nikon D800 et le Canon EOS 5D MkIII pour vous aider à vous faire votre propre opinion (en anglais et en espagnol) :

Bien sûr, l’ensemble de ces tests resteront listés sur les pages spécifiques pour ces deux appareils photo.

Si vous êtes un passionné d’astronomie, vous savez certainement que la plupart des appareils photo numériques actuels comportent un capteur numérique très sensible à la lumière infra-rouge mais qui est couvert par une filtre pour s’en débarrasser. De fait, la sensibilité à l’IR est gênante dans la plupart des situations quotidiennes de photographie. Mais les astronomes aiment pouvoir capter la lumière IR associée à certaines émission de l’atome d’hydrogène (très présent dans les galaxies qui nous entourent).

Par le passé, certains astronomes en sont même venus à prendre leurs outils pour bricoler leur appareil photo (oui, oui ! pour en retirer des morceaux) mais Canon a la réputation d’être plutôt à l’écoute de ce genre de besoin (voir le EOS 20Da paru il y a quelques années). Aujourd’hui, ils proposent un Canon EOS 60D modifié pour remplacer le filtre IR original par un autre qui est substantiellement plus sensible à l’infrarouge utile aux astronomes. Le Canon EOS 60Da devrait être un bien bel objet pour les astronomes à son prix de US$1500 et avec son capteur très sensible équipé de 18 millions de pixels.

As a specialized product, the EOS 60Da is only available to order from select authorized dealers. The estimated retail price is $1,499.00 and it is expected to be available this month.

Cela ressemble à une rengaine ces derniers temps : les appareils photos les plus récents semblent tous avoir été lancés avec des bugs plus ou moins présents. Pour mémoire, je citerais :

• Les fichiers du Canon EOS 5D MkIII ne passent pas toujours bien sur DPP v3.11.10 (la nature exacte du problème n’est pas très claire : quelque chose à voir avec la précision et le contraste des images dans le traitement contre le bruit numérique).
• FStoppers semble avoir montré soit une fuite de lumière soit une sensibilité des algorithmes d’exposition à des conditions de charge de la batterie sur le Canon EOS 5D MkIII.
• Il arrive que le Nikon D800 ne s’éteigne pas quand on le met sur OFF.

Canon et Nikon vont prochainement mettre à jour soit le firmware de l’appareil soit le logiciel de traitement. Mais cela confirme une nouvelle fois que nous n’achetons plus uniquement des appareils photo au sens traditionnel du terme (une merveilleuse mécanique fine) mais des ordinateurs (avec tout ce que cela comporte de logiciels et… de bugs).

C’est à se demander s’il ne faudra pas bientôt attendre quelques semaines (quelques mois ?) avant de juger un appareil photo et avant de l’acheter. On avait déjà remarqué que les firmwares pouvaient exister en version pré-production (certains tests préliminaires en sont ainsi entachés d’erreurs grossières) ou que certaines marques (Sony, pour l’A77 et l’A700 ?) prenaient plusieurs mois pour produire un firmware que l’on puisse qualifier de définitif.

Messieurs les fabricants, soyez plus soigneux : vous allez aussi voir les clients devenir beaucoup moins fidèles, beaucoup plus inquiets. La valeur de vos marques va s’éroder si vous ne restez pas fidèle à l’image que l’industrie photographique avait durant tout le XXe siècle. Et qu’elle pourrait perdre…

Ses autres dessins valent le déplacement, et pas uniquement pour leurs qualités quasi-photographiques.

Alors, après plus de trois ans de bons et loyaux services, il cède la place à un nouvel appareil dont le suffixe MkIII indique bien qu’il n’a pas l’intention de révolutionner le paysage mais qu’il souhaite continuer à satisfaire les heureux clients sans se laisser impressionner par l’arrivée progressive des concurrents (le succès attire l’imitation).

Légèrement plus lourd, le Canon EOS 5D MkIII apporte quelques améliorations :

• 22,3 méga-pixels (au lieu de 21.1 MP)
• Écran LCD 3,2″ (au lieu de 3″)
• Sensibilité : 100-25600 ISO [ext. 50-102400 ISO] (au lieu de 100-6400 ISO [ext. 50 à 25600 ISO])
• Vidéo à 60 images/s (au lieu de 30 images/s) en Full HD 720p
• Rafales à 6 i/s (au lieu de 3.9 i/s)
• Autofocus à 61 zones (au lieu de 9+6)
• Construction tropicalisée
• viseur à couverture de 100% (au lieu de 98%)
• Double slot mémoire : CompactFlash + SD (la transition est entamée !)
• Mesure de l’exposition sur 63 zones (au lieu de 35)

La résolution qui a à peine avancé se traduit par une meilleure sensibilité (liée à la progression technologique). Canon se montre très raisonnable (qui pourrait leur reprocher de considérer qu’au delà de 20 MP, il n’y a guère de gain réel à attendre d’une résolution follement augmentée ?) pour le meilleur usage des clients. En particulier, les modes vidéo peuvent maintenant monter à 25600 ISO, ce qui est assurément un point fort dans l’esprit de prises de vues « difficiles ».

Le plus gros progrès est assurément du côté du système d’autofocus : bienvenue dans le mode nouveau de l’AF venant du Canon EOS 1D-X ! Le seul regret (modéré, il est vrai) est de voir que les zones laissent une assez grande marge non-couverte sur les bords de l’image. Cela nous laisse espérer l’application de ce capteur dans un successeur du 7D qui profiterait alors d’une couverture idéale (ça s’est déjà vu).

L’ensemble du mécanisme et de l’électronique est amélioré et cela se voit avec le bond en avant de la fréquence des rafales (pratiquement doublée). C’est la signe d’un travail de fond des équipes de Canon et cela augure bien des résultats à en attendre lors des premiers essais.

Contrairement à d’autres, je ne vanterai pas le nouveau calculateur DIGIC 5+ dont, comme d’habitude, Canon ne dit que du bien mais sans entrer dans la moindre précision technique. Il est au service du reste. Mais il joue certainement un grand rôle dans la gestion des modes d’exposition multiples qui apparaissent ici :

• HDR
• Additive
• Average
• Bright
• Dark

Outre, le très prévisible mode HDR, il faudra expérimenter avec les autres modes pour découvrir leur apport réel en photographie (et pas seulement en démonstration).

Alors, évolution ou révolution ?

Pour moi, on ne peut guère parler de révolution puisque le Canon EOS 5D MkIII n’est pas un boitier qui renverse les habitudes. Mais, trois ans d’évolutions en un seul mouvement ! Les actuels propriétaires du MkII risquent bien de retourner voir leur revendeur préférer avec la carte bleue au poing. Il y a suffisamment de nouveautés et d’amélioration pour garantir que le changement sera frappant sans perturber exagérément les habitudes. Canon a bien fait de nous faire attendre un peu.

Canon’s  award-winning EOS system first debuted in March of 1987 with the introduction of the EOS 650 SLR camera and three EF lenses.

The EOS 5D Mark III inherits many features from Canon’s recently announced flagship DSLR, the EOS-1D X, including a DIGIC 5+ Imaging Processor and a high-performance 61-point High Density Reticular AF array with up to 41 cross-type points and five dual cross-type points available, depending on the lens in use. The enhanced processing power enables fast continuous shooting of up to six fps, exceeding the speed of the EOS 5D Mark II model by more than 50 percent, and with improved weather resistance the EOS 5D Mark III is a serious option for sports and wildlife photographers.

EOS 5D Mark III Video: The Legacy Continues

The EOS 5D Mark II blazed the trail for EOS cameras and Canon to enter the professional video and cinema markets, paving the way for Canon’s recent introduction of the Cinema EOS system of cameras and lenses. Now, the EOS 5D Mark III continues Canon’s commitment to these new markets with new and requested features from cinematographers, television production professionals and independent filmmakers. This new model captures 1080p Full HD video at 24p (23.976), 25p, and 30p (29.97) fps; 720p HD recording at 60 (59.94) and 50 fps; and SD recording at 30 (29.97) and 25 fps, giving cinematographers and videographers more flexibility and options for video capture.

The EOS 5D Mark III includes new H.264 video compression formats to simplify and speed up post-production work: intraframe (ALL-I) compression for an editing-friendly format and interframe (IPB) compression for superior data storage efficiency, giving professionals options to help achieve their ideal workflow. Like the EOS-1D X, the 5D Mark III also includes two methods of SMPTE-compliant timecode embedding, Rec Run and Free Run, allowing video footage from multiple cameras and separate audio recordings to be synced together in post production. 

The new full-frame CMOS sensor and DIGIC 5+ processor have enhanced the camera’s image processing performance over the 5D Mark II, significantly reducing moiré and color artifacts in scenes with horizontal lines.  The video footage produced will exhibit less moiré than seen in previous DSLR models, resulting in a significant improvement in HD video quality. Accommodating documentary filmmakers, and event videographers using EOS DSLR cameras, the 5D Mark III includes the ability to record video continuously up to 29 minutes and 59 seconds across multiple 4GB files.  Long-form filmmakers will enjoy the camera’s automatic file splitting in combination with the extended memory capacity offered by dual card slots.

The Canon EOS 5D Mark III also includes manual audio level control with 64 levels, adjustable both before and during movie recording. There is also an automatic audio level setting, or sound recording can be turned off entirely. A wind filter is also included. Sound can be recorded either through the internal monaural microphone or via an optional external microphone through the stereo mic input. Notably, the EOS 5D Mark III is the first EOS Digital SLR to feature a built-in headphone jack for real-time audio monitoring during video capture.

Newly Developed Canon CMOS Sensor

With its completely new 22.3-megapixel full-frame Canon CMOS image sensor, the EOS 5D Mark III becomes the highest resolution Canon Digital SLR released to date. It is eminently suitable for a wide variety of assignments including weddings and portraits, nature and wildlife, travel and landscapes as well as commercial and industrial photography. With a gapless microlens design, a new photodiode structure and improved on-chip noise reduction, the new sensor achieves higher sensitivity and lower noise levels for both RAW image data as well as in-camera JPEGs and EOS Movies compared to the 5D Mark II. The result is outstanding image quality in all shooting conditions, even low light. An eight-channel readout doubles the speed of image data throughput from the sensor to the DIGIC 5+ processor, resulting in better video image quality as well as six fps for still photos.

The low-light capability of the EOS 5D Mark III is evident in its incredible ISO range and image quality in poor lighting conditions. Adjustable from ISO 100 to 25,600 within its standard range, the new model also offers a low ISO 50 setting for studio and landscape photography and two extended ISO settings of 51,200 and 102,400, well suited for law enforcement, government or forensic field applications.

The new 5D Mark III is also equipped with Canon’s EOS Integrated Cleaning System, featuring a Self Cleaning Sensor Unit with a fluorine coating that repels dust and dirt particles.

Canon-Exclusive DIGIC 5+ Imaging Processor

The EOS 5D Mark III’s new DIGIC 5+ Imaging Processor is 17 times faster than the DIGIC 4.The EOS 5D Mark III uses that extra speed not only for improved image quality, but also to add no less than nine new features that do not exist on the 5D Mark II. These new features include six fps continuous shooting, HDR and Multiple Exposure modes, in-camera RAW processing, a comparative playback function, Scene Intelligent Auto mode, two forms of movie compression, and support for high-speed UDMA 7 Compact Flash memory cards.

Another extremely valuable feature enhanced by the DIGIC 5+ Imaging Processor is the EOS 5D Mark III’s choice of reduced resolution M-RAW (10.5 megapixel) and S-RAW (5.5 megapixel) recording modes. These settings are particularly useful to wedding photographers for candid photos that do not require the EOS 5D Mark III’s 22 megapixel full resolution, because they take up less space on the memory cards and speed up post-processing without losing the critical benefits of RAW image data, such as highlight and shadow control as well as white balance adjustment. M-RAW and S-RAW also preserve the full field of view rather than cropping the image or resorting to JPEG mode to reduce resolution.

High-Performance 61-Point High Density Reticular AF

For still photographers, Canon has included its new 61-point High Density Reticular AF System, originally introduced with the top-of-the-line EOS-1D X professional camera. A significant advancement over previous 5D-series AF systems, the new 61-Point High Density Reticular AF included in the EOS 5D Mark III is the most sophisticated SLR AF system Canon has ever released. All 61 points are manually selectable and sensitive to horizontal contrast with maximum apertures larger than or equal to f/5.6. The camera’s twenty one focusing points in the central area are also standard precision cross-type and effective with maximum apertures larger than or equal to f/5.6. The center five points are ultra-high-precision diagonal cross-type points for maximum apertures larger than or equal to f/2.8. The 20 outer focusing points function as high-precision cross-type points with maximum apertures larger than or equal to f/4.0. Other innovations of the new 61-point High Density Reticular AF include expanded AF coverage area, superior focusing precision and low-light sensitivity to EV -2, and greater low-contrast subject detection capability compared to earlier EOS AF systems. All AF functions now have their own menu tab for quick and easy access (formerly AF custom functions in previous EOS models).  A new AF Configuration Tool allows for customized setting of tracking sensitivity, the acceleration and deceleration of tracking subjects, and AF point auto switching, all of which are easily accessed and adjusted via the new AF menu tab. A built-in Feature Guide advises photographers on which settings to use according to subject matter.

The EOS 5D Mark III uses the same high-performance AI Servo III AF tracking algorithm as the flagship EOS-1D X professional DSLR. This new feature works together with the 61-point High Density Reticular AF system to provide superb tracking performance that blends very well with the new camera’s 6 frames-per-second high-speed continuous shooting capabilities.

Similar to the AF point selection options offered in the EOS 7D and EOS-1D X camera models, the EOS 5D Mark III offers six AF point selection modes: Spot, Single Point, Single Point with surrounding four points, Single Point with surrounding eight points, Zone selection and Automatic AF point selection.

iFCL Metering

Complementing the EOS 5D Mark III camera’s 61-point AF system is Canon’s 63-zone iFCL dual layer metering system. The ‘FCL’ stands for ‘Focus, Color and Luminance,’ and references the fact that the metering system not only measures color and luminance data, but also analyzes the data provided by each point of the AF system. Canon’s iFCL metering keeps exposure levels stable from shot to shot, even as the light source changes. The camera’s autofocus information is also used to help determine which area of the scene is of greatest importance in determining exposure.

HDR Mode

The EOS 5D Mark III camera features a built-in HDR mode, merging three images at various exposure levels into a single image, in-camera, for stunning photographs of landscapes and architecture with enhanced tonal gradation beyond the range of the naked eye. The exposure levels in the camera’s HDR mode can be set to cover a range of up to ±3 stops, in a choice of five settings: Natural, Art Standard, Art Vivid, Art Bold and Art Embossed providing unique visual effects.  Individual source images can be saved as separate files, and the HDR mode has an optional automatic alignment function that can be useful for hand-held shooting. The EOS 5D Mark III’s standard Auto Exposure Bracketing function has been upgraded to allow for up to seven exposures per sequence, and exposure compensation can now be set for up to +/- 5EV.

Multiple Exposure Mode

The EOS 5D Mark III is the second EOS Digital SLR after the EOS-1D X to feature Multiple Exposure capabilities with the ability to combine up to nine individual images into a single composite image, with no need for post-processing in a computer. Four different compositing methods are provided for maximum creative control, including Additive, Average, Bright and Dark. Compositing results can be viewed in real time on the camera’s LCD monitor, and there is a one-step Undo command that allows photographers to delete an image and try again if desired. The EOS 5D Mark III camera’s Multiple Exposure mode even allows photographers to specify a previously captured RAW image as the starting point for a new Multiple Exposure composite image, or shoot continuously when photographing moving subjects.

Comparative Playback

A new feature seen for the first time in the EOS System on the 5D Mark III is Comparative Playback allowing photographers to display two images side by side on the camera’s 3.2-inch LCD screen. The images can be displayed with a histogram to check exposure levels, or magnified to check for focus or facial expressions. 

Durability, Reliability and Other Features

The EOS 5D Mark III features a rugged camera body with magnesium alloy body covers and a stainless steel lens mount. The new camera also has dust- and moisture-resistant design with improved gaskets and seals. Although not quite as weatherproof as an EOS-1D-series camera, the EOS 5D Mark III does feature improved weather resistance over the EOS 5D Mark II model. The EOS 5D Mark III’s newly developed shutter unit has a durability rating of 150,000 exposures, and shutter release lag time has been reduced to 59 milliseconds, making the shutter button very responsive. Canon’s locking mode dial is standard on the new model and a new custom function allows photographers to shut off other dials to prevent inadvertent operation.

The EOS 5D Mark III uses the same LP-E6 lithium-ion battery pack as other popular EOS cameras like the 5D Mark II, 7D and 60D. Battery life is estimated at 950 exposures at normal temperatures, an improvement of 100 exposures more than the EOS 5D Mark II. The EOS 5D Mark III body weighs approximately 33.5 oz. with a battery installed, and the dimensions are approximately 6.0 x 4.6 x 3.0 inches.

The EOS 5D Mark III incorporates Silent shooting modes, available for low-speed continuous shooting as well as single exposures. This feature is ideal when photographing in quiet environments. For better file management especially when working with multiple cameras, the new model also supports custom file names. There is also a new image rating feature that lets photographers rank their photos from 1 to 5 stars for quick editing.

The EOS 5D Mark III features a 3.2-inch Clear View II LCD screen with 1,040,000 dot resolution. This is the same screen that’s used in the top-of-the-line EOS-1D X. The camera’s optical viewfinder has been upgraded to approximately 100 percent coverage, and it features an Intelligent Viewfinder display with an optional grid on demand. The EOS 5D Mark III also has a built-in Dual Axis Electronic Level that can be displayed on both the LCD screen and the optical viewfinder.

The EOS 5D Mark III accepts both Compact Flash Type 1 and SD/SDHC/SDXC memory cards in a dual card slot configuration. Three recording methods are supported: Record the same data to both cards, record different file sizes or types to each card, or automatically switch to the second card when the first card is full.

Accessories

The EOS 5D Mark III DSLR also has a number of new optional accessories, including the new Canon Wireless File Transmitter WFT-E7A featuring wireless LAN support for 802.11 a/b/g/n signal protocols for various network environments. The WFT-E7A connects to the camera through its USB port and includes a built-in gigabit Ethernet connection, time syncing for multiple cameras on the same network, FTP mode, EOS Utility mode, WFT Server mode and Media Server mode. With this new WFT model, professionals can synchronize clocks on multiple cameras and use the unit to support linked shooting when utilizing multiple cameras.  In addition, Bluetooth-compatible equipment can be easily linked to the device as well.

The EOS 5D Mark III also has an optional Canon GPS Receiver GP-E2, which can be connected to the camera via the accessory shoe or a USB cable.  With a GPS logging function built-in, the GP-E2 will log latitude, longitude, elevation, and the Universal Time Code – and allow viewing of camera movement on a PC after shooting.  With its built-in compass, the GP-E2 receiver will also record camera direction when shooting, even when shooting vertically. The Canon GPS Receiver GP-E2 is compatible with the EOS-1D X and EOS 7Dⁱ as well as the EOS 5D Mark III.ⁱⁱ

Battery Grip BG-E11 is an optional accessory for the EOS 5D Mark III that accepts one or two LP-E6 lithium-ion battery packs or a set of six AA-size batteries. This new grip has a multicontroller and a multifunction (M.Fn) button together a with a full set of grip controls for easy operation when shooting portraits or other vertical format photos. The BG-E11 is made from sturdy magnesium alloy and has the same degree of weather resistance as the EOS 5D Mark III.

Speedlite 600EX-RT

In addition to the EOS 5D Mark III, Canon is also announcing the first professional Speedlite on the market with a built-in wireless radio transmitter, the new Speedlite 600EX-RT.  The new Canon Speedlite 600EX-RT is the flagship model in the Speedlite line, ideal for wedding portrait and photojournalism. Compatible with all EOS Digital SLRs, this new model eliminates the need for accessory radio slave units and their inherent limitations. Speedlite 600EX-RT features Master-Slave two-way transmission, letting the photographer control the Speedlite settings directly from the “Master” camera.

Radio-based Wireless E-TTL can be performed with up to 15 Speedlite 600EX-RT “slave units”, used off-camera up to 98.4 feet (30m) away, and triggered by either a “Master” 600EX-RT on-camera, or the optional new Speedlite Transmitter ST-E3-RT.  Used with the EOS 5D Mark III or EOS-1D X, up to five groups of flashes can be completely controlled, independently, off-camera. And, it remains fully compatible with Canon’s legacy optical-based Wireless E-TTL technology, for users already committed to existing EOS Speedlites.  The Speedlite features enhanced weather-resistant construction — matching that of the EOS-1D X camera body — and a more reliable electrical contact.  The flash head zoom range now reaches from 20mm to 200mm.The Speedlite also allows remote shutter release of a single EOS camera, or Linked Shooting (simultaneous firing of up to 15 cameras, when one “Master” camera is fired), and includes gelatin filters and a dedicated filter holder to help photographers match ambient light.

Speedlite Transmitter ST-E3-RT

Canon is also introducing the new Speedlite Transmitter ST-E3-RT. Providing full support of Canon’s new radio-based wireless flash technology, the new ST-E3-RT can control up to five groups of flashes, up to 98.4 feet (30m) from the camera. The remote shutter release capability enables photographers to either fire a single camera remotely (by pressing a button on the ST-E3-RT), or to fire up to 15 EOS cameras with Canon’s Linked Shooting feature. Making it easy to control and adjust, all of the Speedlite Transmitter features are accessible through the Flash control menu of the EOS-1D X and EOS 5D Mark III cameras. 

Pricing and Availability

The Canon EOS 5D Mark III Digital SLR camera is expected to be available at the end of March 2012 and will be sold in a body-only configuration at an estimated retail price of $3,499.00. The EOS 5D Mark III will also be available with the EF24-105mm f/4L IS USM zoom lens in a kit for an estimated retail price of $4,299.00. The Wireless File Transmitter WFT-E7A is scheduled to be available by the end of April 2012 at an estimated retail price of $849.99. Availability for GPS Receiver GP-E2 is expected by the end of April 2012, with an estimated retail price of $390.00.Battery Grip BG-E11 is scheduled to be available at the end of April 2012 for an estimated retail price of $490.00. Canon avait prévu de mettre le beau Canon 1D-X en vente à partir de mars 2012. Il n’en sera rien. Un représentant anglais de Canon a indiqué à Associated Press que l’appareil photo pro à base d’un capteur Full Frame de 18 méga-pixels n’arriverait pas avant la fin avril 2012.

Le prix en Grande Bretagne sera de £5,299, et dans le reste de l’Europe de 6.250 euros.

On ne sait pas s’il faut s’en réjouir ou s’en inquiéter, mais Nikon connait des déboires similaires avec les nouveaux D800E et D4.

De fait, il s’agit d’un appareil qui réconcilie les familles Canon 1D et 1Ds. Retour au capteur Full Frame, avec 18 méga-pixels. La sensibilité monte à 204.000 ISO (soit le record absolu de la catégorie… pour le moment) et l’appareil reste même parfaitement utilisable à 25.600 ISO. Au delà, les seuls pros intéressés feront des Scoops en News People pour pouvoir accepter une dégradation qui va au delà du tolérable pour un photographe de studio. Mais cela reste à un niveau ahurissant pour le commun des mortels.

L’autre particularité est la présence d’un obturateur qui accepte des rafales continues à 12 images par seconde ! Si vous acceptez de relever le miroir et de shooter dans le noir avec les réglages pris sur la première images, vous pouvez atteindre l’étonnante cadence de 14 images par seconde. Une démonstration bruyante à plus d’un titre :

Bien sûr, il y a aussi de la vidéo (1080p à 24/25/30fps et 720p à 50/60fps).

On observe aussi la présence d’un énorme capteur AF (61 points au total) qui est associé à des algorithmes (et des options de configuration) destinés à le rendre parfaitement utilisable dans les conditions les plus difficiles.

Impossible de ne pas être impressionné par les caractéristiques. Mais il faut reconnaître que certains vont s’interroger sur la disparition ainsi annoncée du format APS-H qu’utilisait Canon depuis plusieurs années. Personnellement, j’ai toujours pensé que Canon finirait par y renoncer et se rabattre soit sur le Full Frame soit sur l’APS-C qui sont maintenant les vrais standards du marché.

Le Canon EOS 1d X est clairement sensible, prêt à la compétition avec les meilleurs (y compris le Nikon D3s). Même le prix y est avec les 7000 dollars à prévoir.

The Camera With Three Brains
The EOS-1D X features three DIGIC processors, including Dual DIGIC 5+ image processors capable of delivering approximately 17 times more processing speed than DIGIC 4, and a dedicated DIGIC 4 for metering and AF control. In conjunction with the newly developed high-performance 18-megapixel full-frame Canon CMOS image sensor, the Dual DIGIC 5+ processors provide high-speed continuous shooting, lower noise, and a significant increase in data processing speed than previous EOS-1D models. The center five points are also high-precision diagonal cross-type points for maximum apertures as small as f/2.8.  All 61 points are sensitive to horizontal contrast with maximum apertures as small as f/5.6 and 20 of the outer focusing points function as cross-type points with maximum apertures as small as f/4.0. Other innovations of the new 61-point High Density Reticular AF include expanded AF coverage area, superior focusing precision and low light sensitivity, and greater low-contrast subject detection capability compared to earlier EOS AF systems. All AF functions now have their own menu tab for quick and easy access (formerly AF custom functions in previous EOS models).  A new AF Configuration Tool allows for customized setting of tracking sensitivity, the acceleration and deceleration of tracking subjects, and AF point auto switching, all of which are easily accessed and adjusted via the new AF menu tab. A built-in Feature Guide advises photographers on which settings to use according to subject matter.

Similar to the AF point selection options offered in the EOS 7D Digital SLR camera, the EOS-1D X offers six AF point selection modes: Spot, Single Point, Single Point with surrounding four points, Single Point with surrounding eight points, Zone selection and Automatic AF point selection. EOS iTR AF: Intelligent Tracking and Recognition Enhances AF Performance
The Canon EOS-1D X features incredible new EOS iTR (Intelligent Tracking and Recognition) AF options ideal for wedding and event photography as well as sports and photojournalism. The default AF mode for the EOS-1D X uses phase detection AF information, while a new second option uses Face Detection technology to track recognized faces in addition to color information, ideal when shooting events such as tennis or dancing where facial recognition of the original subject will help keep that person in focus throughout the scene.

Exposure Control
For the first time in a Canon DSLR camera, a DIGIC processor is used exclusively with the metering sensor for fast, accurate exposure control. The Canon DIGIC 4 processor takes advantage of the EOS-1D X’s 100,000-pixel RGB Metering Sensor and utilizes 252 zones for general metering or 35 zones for low-light metering to help ensure accurate evaluative ambient or flash exposure.  The new subject recognition capabilities enhance nearly all of the camera’s automatic functions, helping to adjust exposure, autofocus, Auto Lighting Optimizer and Automatic Picture Style to the scene being captured for enhanced image quality. 

Multiple Exposure Modes
The EOS-1D X is the first EOS Digital SLR to feature Multiple Exposure capability. The camera can combine up to nine individual images into a single composite image, with no need for post-processing in a computer. Four different compositing methods are provided for maximum creative control, including Additive, Average, Bright and Dark. Compositing results can be viewed in real time on the camera’s LCD monitor, and there is a one-step Undo command that allows photographers to delete an image and try again if desired. The EOS-1D X’s Multiple Exposure mode even allows photographers to specify a previously captured RAW image as the starting point for a new Multiple Exposure composite image. 

Super High Speed Mode
The Canon EOS-1D X camera breaks new ground in the world of digital SLRs, offering a Super High Speed Mode which increases shooting speeds up to 14 fps at full 18-megapixel resolution in JPEG mode*1. The new camera is also capable of shooting RAW, JPEG, or RAW+JPEG at speeds up to 12 fps in One Shot AF or AI Servo AF for enhanced performance in sports photography and other applications requiring high-speed digital capture. This new level of performance is made possible by the combination of the EOS-1D X’s 16-channel readout CMOS sensor, Dual DIGIC 5+ image processors, and a completely new reflex mirror mechanism that has been engineered by Canon to combine high-performance with exceptional precision and reliability.

Enhanced EOS HD Video – New Compressions, Longer Recording
Centered around an all-new full-frame CMOS sensor with larger pixels than those found on the EOS 5D Mark II image sensor, the EOS-1D X utilizes new HD video formats to simplify and speed up post-production work.  The two new compression formats offered on the EOS-1D X include intraframe (ALL-i ) compression for an editing-friendly format and interframe (IPB) compression for superior data compression, giving professionals the options they need for their ideal workflow. Answering the requests of cinematographers and filmmakers, the EOS-1D X includes two methods of SMPTE-compliant timecode embedding, Rec Run and Free Run, allowing multiple cameras or separate sound recording to be synced together in post production. 

Canon’s all new full-frame CMOS sensor ensures that video footage captured on the EOS-1D X will exhibit less moiré than any previous Canon model, resulting in a significant improvement in HD video quality. A desired feature for many documentary filmmakers using Canon DSLRs was to enable recording beyond the four gigabyte (GB) file capacity and the EOS-1D X is the answer. The new camera features automatic splitting of movie files when a single file exceeds 4GB.  The new file splitting function allows for continuous video recording up to 29 minutes and 59 seconds across multiple 4GB files; no frames are dropped and the multiple files can be seamlessly connected in post production, providing filmmakers the recording time they want in the same convenient DSLR form factor. The camera records Full HD at 1920 x 1080 in selectable frame rates of 24p (23.976), 25p, or 30p (29.97); and 720p HD or SD video recording at either 50p or 60p (59.94). SD video can be recorded in either NTSC or PAL standards.

The Canon EOS-1D X also includes manual audio level control, adjustable both before and during movie recording, an automatic setting, or it can be turned off entirely. A wind filter is also included. Sound can be recorded either through the internal monaural microphone or via an optional external microphone through the stereo mic input. 

Enhanced Ergonomics & Optimized Design
Photographers familiar with Canon’s EOS 1D-series of cameras will notice the control configuration of the EOS-1D X takes a different approach to button placement.  The re-designed exterior and ergonomic button configuration feels comfortable in your right hand, allowing seamless navigation through menu options. 

The Live View Button has been conveniently placed near the user’s thumb for one-touch switching between Live View and Viewfinder shooting. The Quick Control Button and menu navigation controls will allow users to change camera settings using only their right hand, for fast, simple one-handed control using their thumb on the scroll wheel. The new multi-controller is positioned by the right hand thumb when the camera is held for vertical shooting and enables the same level of control to camera operators when shooting vertically as they have when shooting horizontally.  On the front of the camera are four user assignable function buttons, two for vertical shooting and two for horizontal shooting, allowing customizable button control when shooting in either position.  The camera also features a level of weather resistance equivalent to earlier professional models such as the EOS-1D Mark IV.

Canon has answered the request of many professional EOS photographers and incorporated Dual Card Slots into the new EOS-1D X DSLR camera. The dual CF card slots will allow photographers to carry only one memory card format and still achieve instant image back-ups and enhanced storage capacity.

This camera also features a new shutter design with even greater durability and precision. Rated to 400,000 cycles, the new carbon fiber shutter blades are more lightweight and durable, allowing the EOS-1D X to achieve over 100,000 cycles more than the shutter of the EOS-1D Mark IV.  A new shutter motion and new motor help further reduce vibration in the camera. The EOS-1D X also features an electronic first curtain, new to the EOS-1D series DSLRs, for minimal in-camera vibration during image capture.

Connectivity
For professional photographers who prefer a wired workflow and transfer system, Canon has included a built-in LAN connection in the EOS-1D X DSLR. The built-in LAN connection features a gigabit Ethernet Jack capable of 1000BASE-T transmission speeds, offering photographers a stable wired connection for ultra-fast data transmission.  If the network were to go down, the camera will attempt to resend images until the files are sent.  The EOS-1D X also features a direct image transfer function whereby images can be selected for transfer, and only sent once a LAN or USB connection is established.

Accessories
Designed exclusively for the EOS-1D X, the new Canon WFT-E6A Wireless File Transmitter* features wireless LAN support for 802.11n network transfer rates providing users with increased communication speed when compared to previous models.  With this new dust and weather resistant model, professionals can synchronize clocks on multiple cameras and use the unit to support linked shooting when utilizing multiple cameras.  In addition, Bluetooth-compatible equipment can be easily linked to the device as well.

The EOS-1D X also offers an optional Canon GP-E1 GPS Receiver*, which can be easily integrated into the camera’s body.  Powered by the camera, this GPS receiver provides the same weatherproof resistance as the EOS-1D X, even at the connector. With an electronic compass on-board, the GP-E1 will log movement – latitude, longitude, elevation, and the Universal Time Code – and allow viewing of camera movement on a PC after shooting.  The receiver will also record camera direction when shooting, even when shooting vertically.

Pricing and Availability
The Canon EOS-1D X Digital SLR camera is scheduled for March 2012 availability and will be sold in a body-only configuration at an estimated retail price of $6,800.00. The compact, lightweight WFT-E6A Wireless File Transmitter is scheduled to be available in March 2012 and have an estimated retail price of $600. Availability for the GP-E1 GPS receiver is expected in April 2012 with an estimated retail price of $300.

*1 Super High Speed Continuous shooting at 14 fps requires mirror lock and JPEG mode at ISO speeds less than 32000.

La patience est certainement encore nécessaire dans ce domaine (Canon est en train de finir de lancer les focales fixes pour ses télés pro) mais début 2012…

Le seul problème : personne ne sait vraiment de quoi il s’agit. Et comme les Canon-lovers n’ont essentiellement rien à se mettre sous la dent en matière de nouveautés (Canon et Nikon avaient bien dit que ce n’était même pas la peine de compter sur leur présence à la Photokina si elle restait en septembre cette année), le buzz bat son plein.

Rien ne filtre pour le moment, mais comme il s’agit d’une invitation à Hollywood et que Canon a quelque souci à se faire sur le marché de la vidéo pro, il est probable qu’on ne verra pas de reflex Canon en novembre…

En un sens, c’est amusant de voir certains que je ne dénoncerai bien sûr pas (ils se reconnaîtront) remuer la calebasse à rumeurs pour Nikon et Canon alors qu’ils savent parfaitement bien qu’il n’y a pas une seule rumeur fondée à présenter puisqu’il n’y a aucune annonce prête dans le court terme. Pour le moment, ces deux marques semblent continuer à se débattre avec la remise à la cadence des productions actuelles plus qu’avec les lancements de produits nouveaux (cela doit sérieusement aider Sony, Samsung et Pentax, d’ailleurs).
